This advanced M&E training targets NGO and IA staff that have quite some experience of monitoring and evaluation.

It consists of two parts:

Part 1 (2-4 October): Planning for M&E, Theory of Change, Indicators, Data-collection and Data-analysis

Part 2 (5 October): Setting up, managing and using evaluations

Objectives of the course: By the end of the training participants will:

  • Have developed a deeper understanding of the characteristics of effective M&E and M&E systems;
  • Have reviewed approaches to planning for M&E, including Theory of Change, and explored some of the challenges with these;
  • Be able to select and use appropriate data collection methods and tools effectively and explored debates around newer qualitative and participatory approaches;
  • Have considered principles and steps in data analysis and the issue of quality of evidence;
  • Have explored ways to address issues around impact assessment and the M&E of outcomes and impact;
  • Have considered their own role in bringing about improved M&E within their projects, programmes and organisations;
  • Have explored how to set up, manage and encourage uptake and use of an evaluation

Intended audience

This course is intended for those with some experience of monitoring and evaluation. It has been designed to build on and enhance participant’s skills and understanding of M&E and work through some of the complex challenges in doing M&E, alongside other experienced practitioners. As the training will be in English, taught by a native English speaker, it is important that you have a sufficient level of English.

Content

These are the core content topics that will be treated:

  1. Planning for M&E with a focus on Theory of Change;
  2. Developing indicators;
  3. Data collection: surveys, participatory approaches, measuring change, approaches to measuring outcomes and impact;
  4. Data analysis
  5. Evaluations: introducing evaluations, managing effective evaluations, encouraging evaluation uptake and use
  6. Incorporating learning into M&E

The training aims to be practice-based y making use of exercises, case studies and, where possible, products of your own or your organization such as the ToC of your organization. Also for the part of evaluation, the aim is to link up with your questions or challenges in setting up and managing your mid-term evaluations.

Preparation

If you subscribe for this training you will be asked to fill out a needs assessment to get a better view of the level of your knowledge and experience. The needs assessment will also be used to further tailor the specific content of certain parts of the training.

During the first day we will work on the Theory of changes of your organisations. We will ask you to send them in a couple of weeks beforehand.
